Policy Analysis for Complex Transport Systems

“Policy Analysis for Complex Transport Systems” PACTS is a proposal submitted to the EU / US Cooperation Programme in Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training, Actions for Transatlantic Links and Academic Networks in Training and Integrated Studies (ATLANTIS), for Policy Oriented Measures. We propose collaboration between two United States universities and three European universities, in the area of “Policy Analysis for Complex Transport Systems”. The project will develop curricula for policy development to be used not only for advanced graduate and Phd student courses, but also addressed to professional in the transportation industry.

The project also involves the organization and offering of one-week intensive course that will take place in Azores. The course will be offered to practitioners and the proposed program will NOT only contain the traditional material covered in engineering or management schools in the fields of transport and logistics, but it will focus on actual case studies and models that have been developed both in the EU and the U.S. The case study approach has been successfully used in recent years in business and management schools, and proved to be a very effective learning methodology.

U.S. and E.U. lead universities will share the responsibility for project management, and project administration. Consortium partners will supply transportation course information and provide active development of curricula and case studies. All partners will help disseminate information regarding the public website through major transportation and networks such as TRANSPORTNET, as well as participation and presentations in key transportation conferences.

The policy issues addressed by this project include the dissemination of information and academic guidance across U.S. and E.U., promotion of new educational and research activities between E.U. and U.S.; improvement of the  quality and efficiency of academic products and services; and provision of incentives for student achievement and "lifelong learning for all". Three meetings are going to take place during the life of the project.
